Why skills will define the next generation of talent
Gulf News
|May 09, 2025
Research from the World Economic Forum (WEF) and PwC found only around 50% of those surveyed are employed in professions that match their formal education level 2.
A concerning statistic for those who view higher education as a stepping stone to career success, particularly with the rising costs of education which requires significant investment from both students and parents. In a region like the UAE—where innovation moves at pace and industries are in constant transformation—the pathway into the workforce is shifting. Student and employers are becoming increasingly aware that success looks different. It's no longer defined by academic credentials alone, but on real capability: skills that are relevant, current, and applicable from day one.
THE MARKET HAS MOVED. EDUCATION NEEDS TO CATCH UP
Across the GCC, businesses are digitalising at pace. The UAE has declared ambitions to become a global hub for Al, fintech, and smart services, which is rapidly being reflected in the workplace. Yet for many graduates their learning environments don't reflect the evolution of the workplace, leaving them feeling unprepared.
