Police warn against leaving vehicles with engine running

Motorists tend to do so when refuelling, at ATMs, praying or running short errands

Abu Dhabi Police have warned motorists against leaving their vehicles idling and unattended when refuelling, using ATMs, praying, or running short errands.

This could cause a fire at fuel stations, or an accident if the vehicle suddenly moves. It also makes it an easy target for theft.

Abu Dhabi Police highlighted Article 5, Clause 4 of the Traffic and Road Rules that stipulates that when parking in a public space, the engine must be turned off and the vehicle secured against unintended movement in the driver's absence.

So, leaving the engine running and stepping away from the vehicle even briefly violates safety regulations. It is also a punishable offence.
