VIOLATORS FACE FINES RANGING FROM DH10,000 TO DHIM

- BY ASHFAQ AHMED Senior Assistant Editor

Media must follow 20 key content standards

A new media law that came into effect on May 29, marks a major shift in the regulation of media content across print, broadcast, and digital platforms in the UAE.

The legislation introduces strict standards and heavy penalties for violations. Fines can range from Dh10,000 to Dhl million, depending on the nature and frequency of the offence.

To help media outlets, content creators, and advertisers navigate the updated legal landscape, the UAE Media Council has also issued 20 mandatory content standards.

"There are no restrictions on content creation, but creators must adhere to responsible practices that reflect our values," Mohammad Saeed Al Shehhi, Secretary-General of the UAE Media Council, said. "Our aim is to regulate in partnership with the media community, not impose limitations."

The standards are:

■ Respect Islamic beliefs, monotheistic religions, and not offend other beliefs.

■ Respect the state's governance system, its symbols and institutions, and interests.
