More than three years after a fatal crash claimed the life of Danielle van Jaarsveld (41) in Sedgefield, the man accused of causing it appeared in court earlier this month without the victim's family being informed of the proceedings.

Gareth Webster first appeared in court on a charge of culpable homicide in 2023. Following several postponements, the State provisionally withdrew the matter in March 2024 due to an outstanding forensic report.

After fighting to have the case re-enrolled, Van Jaarsveld's family turned to AfriForum's private prosecution unit. Its involvement led to the matter being fully investigated and formally enrolled.

Webster again appeared in the George Magistrate's Court on Wednesday 14 January on the same charge. He is accused of causing a head-on collision on Swartvlei Beach Road near the Sedge Links Golf Course on 6 November 2022, which resulted in Van Jaarsveld's death.
