A rising local rugby talent from Borcherds, Ronalddino Williams (20), was recently given the chance to represent his community and country at a tournament in Thailand.
Williams has been selected to take part in the Next Gen Blitz Rugby Tournament from 14 to 18 July, but the cost of the trip is proving to be a major hurdle for him and his family.
According to his mother, Caroline, they need to raise R48 000 to cover travel expenses, tournament registration and airfare. He is due to leave South Africa on 11 July.
"I've always dreamt of playing internationally. This is a huge opportunity for me."
"I am excited about the possibility of him going," says Caroline. "I believe it can open new doors for him. We live in a rough area where drugs and alcohol are rife. There's a lot of talent here, but unfortunately, many of the kids fall victim to substance abuse. As a single mother, I want my son to do well and rise above his circumstances."
