Kick-off for uni’s 3G pitch that breaks new ground
Frome Standard
|June 05, 2025
The University of Bath has unveiled the UK's first fully recyclable 3G pitch.
University Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Phil Taylor marked the official opening by taking a penalty on the state-of-the-art surface, with university officials, students and local clubs including Bath City FC in attendance.
Built to comply with FIFA, World Rugby and Sport England standards, the pitch promises not only high-quality play but also a fully circular end-of-life process.
The artificial turf contains no latex and is composed of a single polymer, allowing for complete recycling rather than landfill disposal.
In place of traditional rubber crumb, the surface uses an engineered wood-particle infill that offers natural cushioning and grip.
This biodegradable material reduces reliance on synthetic alternatives and supports sustainable waste practices.
Beneath the surface, a high-performance shock-pad has been designed for multiple life cycles, making it reusable and recyclable.
