US govt shutdown: Pressure on Democrats

THE WHITE HOUSE tightened its pressure on congressional Democrats as a US government shutdown lurched into a second week, saying it would give the holdouts another chance to agree to the spending bill before initiating mass firings of federal workers.

With the Senate set to vote for the fifth time on a stopgap bill to keep the government open through November 21, Kevin Hassett, an economic adviser to President Donald Trump, argued that it was time for Democrats to be "reasonable".
