PM targets Cong: 'Bid during Emergency to enslave judiciary'

Modi on Sunday invoked the Emergency during his monthly Mann Ki Baat radio address, saying: "Those who imposed the Emergency not only murdered our Constitution but also had the intention to make the judiciary as their slave."

Adding that "people were tormented on a large scale", he said: "There are many such examples which cannot be forgotten."
His government marked June 25 as "Samvidhan Hatya Diwas", to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency.
On the night of June 25, 1975, the Indira Gandhi-led Congress government had invoked Article 352 of the Constitution to impose Emergency on the grounds of "internal disturbance". This was the first and only time this provision was used in Independent India.
Modi's address also featured audio clips of former PMs Morarji Desai and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, as well as former Deputy Prime Minister Jagjivan Ram, discussing the 21-month Emergency period between 1975 and 1977.
