Is it possible, for haemoglobin to jump so much in just a week? Can haemoglobin increase from 7 to 14 in a week through diet alone? Dr Rakesh Gupta, senior consultant, internal medicine, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, says: "It is highly unlikely for haemoglobin (Hb) levels to double from 7 to 14 g/dL in just a week solely through diet, even with nutrient-rich foods like carrots, beets, and greens. Haemoglobin production depends on the availability of key nutrients such as iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid. While consuming these foods can provide the necessary nutrients, the body's ability to absorb and utilise them is limited by physiological processes. Haemoglobin levels typically improve gradually over weeks or months with sustained dietary and/or medical intervention. Additionally, severe anaemia (Hb less than 7) often requires more immediate medical measures, such as iron supplements, B12 injections, or even blood transfusions, depending on the cause.
