Kind-hearted Karen receives BEM for fighting kids' hunger

And the remarkable 56-year-old mum of three, and nana to two grandchildren, has finally got her hands on the British Empire Medal she was awarded in the King's Birthday Honours List earlier this year for services to her beloved community.

She told the Standard: "I was overwhelmed to be told I was getting the BEM in June and now to actually have it in my hands is amazing. It is a proud moment for me and my family."

It was presented to her by Dumfriesshire Lord Lieutenant Fiona Armstrong, accompanied by Depute Lord Lieutenant Lady Ann Jack, at a celebration on Saturday in Lochside Community Centre. Surrounded by her family, friends, volunteers and trustees of the Lochside Community Centre Association, it was a proud moment for the incredible woman who spotted a need to feed in 2018 - and went for it.

Founder of The Grub Club food support scheme, Karen started the popular free community cafe with a £20,000 funding boost from Dumfries and Galloway Council to combat "holiday hunger" for children.
