A DERBY neonatal nurse was given a surprise free holiday - for working Christmas Day despite being on maternity leave with a premature baby.
Sarah Alcock, 35, from Oakwood, has forgone December 25 at home on numerous occasions to support her emergency neonatal unit during the busy festive period at Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham.
Born at just 25 weeks weighing 1lb 12oz, their eight-month-old will be celebrating her first Christmas this year, but with staffing pressures, she has volunteered to step in again to help her colleagues out.
Her husband, Dave, who nominated her for the holiday, said: Sarah is a hero. She works on the emergency neonatal unit and her work doesn't stop just because it's Christmas. She has to go there regardless of the date.
