After defeat at the Battle of Gazala, Rommel’s Panzer Army Africa had them on the run.
Now both sides, exhausted by the demands of desert warfare, faced each other at the First Battle of El Alamein with Rommel determined to break through to Alexandria and the Suez Canal.
