THIS week marks UK Parliament Week, running from November 24 to November 30, and it has been genuinely inspiring to see so many people across South Derbyshire getting involved.

- SAMANTHA NIBLETT

With 33 schools and organisations taking part, our area continues to demonstrate just how engaged, thoughtful and community-minded it is.

Parliament Week is more than just a date in the calendar, it is an opportunity for people of all ages to understand how our democracy works, how laws are shaped, and, most importantly, how every individual can play a part in influencing the future of our country.

One of the real highlights of my week was visiting John Port Spencer Academy, in Etwall, where I joined a year 13 assembly to speak about my work as an MP.

I also had the chance to chat with several students afterwards about ways they can get more involved in politics, from volunteering in the community to seeking work experience.

Their sixth form was running a mock election throughout the week, giving students the opportunity to explore voting in a mock polling station based on party manifesto promises.

I’m very much looking forward to hearing the results and, more importantly, hearing the conversations their election sparks. Young people often bring a refreshing clarity and energy to political debate, and it is incredibly encouraging to see the next generation so eager to participate.
