ATTACKER AVOIDS JAIL OVER 'NASTY ASSAULT' THAT ALSO SAW HIM PUNCH POLICE TO FLOOR BEFORE FLEEING
A DERBY police officer had two of her fingernails ripped out when she was attacked by a man she had been sent to arrest.
Jordan Birks punched the arresting officer to the floor, causing her to hit her head on concrete before he got on top of her.
The 28-year-old Birks, of Chaddesden, then fled from the garden, off Burton Road, before being stopped.
At the time, he was being searched for by the police after assaulting his on-off partner at a city centre fair.
Handing him a two-year jail term, suspended for 20 months, at Derby Crown Court, Judge Jonathan Straw said: "This was a nasty assault against a female officer who, in the circumstances, was vulnerable because she was on her own trying to apprehend you to effect an arrest.
"She suffered trauma as a consequence of your wrongdoing.
