Carlson fightback snuffs out county promotion hopes

DERBYSHIRE'S slim hopes of maintaining a promotion push faded away in a dour day’s cricket against Glamorgan in the Rothesay County Championship once play finally got started on day two.

Carlson fightback snuffs out county promotion hopes

The county's hopes rested on dismissing the visitors cheaply and going in to get a big score themselves and while that hope remained at 99-6 in the 37th over, Kiran Carlson and Tim van der Gugten snuffed it out in stand of 94 in 28 overs for the seventh wicket.

There was no need for Glamorgan to hurry, 27 points ahead of Derbyshire in second place. Taking time out of the game with one day already lost was all that they had to do.

Carlson combined watchful defence with selective aggression to score 94 from 178 balls.

Luis Reece showed why he is the leading wicket-taker in Division Two by claiming 4-67, while Anuj Dal finished with 3-29 from 16 overs.

After rain delayed the start by 30 minutes, Derbyshire's decision to bowl first on a green pitch was quickly rewarded with Glamorgan's openers falling in the space of seven balls.
