How to safeguard your Sassa grant card from skelms and fraudsters
-
GRANTS: Millions rely on Sassa
WITH millions of South Africans relying on old-age grants as their primary source of income, unauthorised deductions continue to threaten the financial stability of vulnerable households.
Despite clear legal protections, limited awareness and predatory practices mean many grant recipients remain exposed to exploitation.
According to Regulation 29 of the Social Assistance Act of 2004, the law is unambiguous: the only permissible deduction from a grant is for a funeral policy, and it may not exceed 10 percent of the grant value. Any other deduction is unlawful.
In response, 1Life Insurance and Clientèle Life have launched a joint education and awareness campaign aimed at empowering old-age grant recipients, caregivers and communities with practical information to help them protect their grants and make informed financial decisions.
Head of Broker Distributions for Clientèle Life, Lesego Molefe, said: "Financial protection must always be rooted in fairness and transparency.
PERSONAL FINANCE
“Through this joint effort, we want grant recipients to understand their rights, recognise legitimate agents, and feel confident to ask questions before agreeing to any policy.”
