Nude idea: At the ancient Olympics in Greece, athletes competed naked in honour of the god Zeus. Legend has it the tradition was kicked off in 702BC when the loincloth of runner Orsippus from Megara slipped off during a race, but he carried on and won it.

The word gymnasium means naked in old Greek. Today a Nude Beach Olympics is held annually at Maslin Beach, South Australia.

Sumo’s missing: Although women are now banned from professional sumo, historically some female wrestlers would engage in naked fights in times of drought in Japan. It was believed to help summon rain.

Uncovered court: In the 1930s a Mr R. Douglas Ogden from Manchester established rules for a game called miniten, a version of tennis, to be played naked at naturist clubs where there wasn’t enough land for full-sized courts. It was played with wooden bats called thugs.
