MILLION MAN TONY TARGETS TITLE DEFENCE

FRESH from breaking the £1 million prize-money barrier for the first time, Tony Carroll is pressing on with the defence of his champion all-weather trainer title.

After 30 years with a licence, the 68-year-old based in Cropthorne, Worcester has reached an unlikely peak, sitting top of both the national Flat trainers' championship and the synthetic table.

As of yesterday he had trained 10 winners in the first nine days of January.

"We should be there for a while because we target this time of year," he says. "It's quite nice with the likes of the Gosdens underneath us."
