INSPIRATION BEHIND THOSE GREAT MONIKERS

Histo-rock band names

Franz Ferdinand: The Scots based their name on Austro-Hungarian heir Archduke Franz Ferdinand, whose assassination in 1914 sparked World War One.

Singer Alex Kapranos said he wanted their music to be as “transformational”.

Foo Fighters: A nickname used for UFOs by Allied pilots flying over Germany in World War Two inspired Dave Grohl's name for the American rockers.

The B-52s: Known for hits like Love Shack, the US band based their name on the 1960s beehive hairdo, which derived from the shape of the B-52 bomber’s nosecone.

Jethro Tull: The rockers got their moniker from an 18th Century agricultural pioneer who invented the seed drill. It was the idea of the band’s agent, a history buff.
