Dettori goes out in style with a double on his final raceday

- by ANDY LINES

FRANKIE Dettori - one the most loved sportsmen of his generation - has finally retired.

Never again will we see the legendary jockey make one of his spectacular flying dismounts after winning a big race.

Dettori, 55, was one of those characters who was loved both by racing fans and the general public alike.

This was despite a controversial career which included a ban for cocaine use and being made bankrupt owing the taxman £750,000.

He also miraculously survived a plane crash and appeared on I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here.

But as Dettori said yesterday in his address to everyone in the racing industry who had helped him along the way: "Thank you for letting a young boy live his dream."

His career came to a fitting end in Brazil on Sunday night, where he went out in glory with two winners, on Speak Alpha and then Bet You Can.
