McFarlane gets his chance to shine as Blues' caretaker boss

- BY BOBBY VINCENT

CALUM MCFARLANE was on the way to a light show in Windsor with his family when he found out about getting the Chelsea caretaker manager job.

Now he will be hoping to shine bright against Manchester City tomorrow - even if he admits that he won't be trying to "reinvent the wheel".

McFarlane, the Blues' Under-21s head coach, was informed he and a handful of his backroom staff would be preparing the West Londoners for the daunting challenge of Pep Guardiola's City at the Etihad following Enzo Maresca’s departure on New Year's Day.

Liam Rosenior has emerged as the big favourite to succeed Maresca as Chelsea's permanent head coach, while McFarlane has just been briefed to focus on tomorrow's trip to Manchester for the time being.

McFarlane arrived at Chelsea to work with the club's academy in the summer from Southampton.
