RELIEF FROM ASHES HELL IN 'BATMANIA'..
-
Holy smokes! When it was founded in 1835, the city was nicknamed Batmania. It wasn't a tribute to the comic book hero, but to explorer John Batman, who claimed to have bought the land in southeastern Oz from the local tribes - although this has since been disputed. It was renamed in 1837 to honour British PM Lord Melbourne.
True originals: The area of Melbourne, in the Aussie state of Victoria, has been home to Aboriginal people from the Kulin Nation for more than 40,000 years. They call the territory Narrm and the River Yarra, which flows through the city, Birrarung or "river of mists".
