HE'S the rising star of horse racing and aiming to become the youngest ever Champion Jockey at just 19 years old. But as Billy Loughnane races at Royal Ascot this week, just what are the physical demands of the sport and how does he keep up his fitness levels? With the meeting at the Berkshire course in full swing and 350,000 spectators cheering on the gee-gees, the Irish rider reveals his health secrets to JAMES MOORE...

"As soon as I finish riding out in the mornings, I head straight to the Peter O’Sullevan House gym in Newmarket. It is a fully quipped gym specifically for the use of jockeys. I go there most days during the week, with maybe one day off at the weekend. It keeps my fitness topped up and helps me stay sharp both physically and mentally. My personal trainer Glenn supports me with my workouts

What is your usual routine at the gym?

“I normally do around 30 to 40 minutes of cardio to start, followed by some strength and conditioning work. I really enjoy running: Cardio is probably my favourite part of it”

What's your typical riding and exercise schedule across the week?

“Most days I’m riding out in the morning, then in the gym straight after. That coupled with riding in a handful of races each day means my level of fitness is good”
