You MARMITE not know this!

German boffin Justus Liebig paved the way for Marmite in the 19th Century after accidentally discovering that leftover brewer's yeast could be concentrated and then eaten.
-
The Marmite Food Extract Company was born in 1902 in Burton-on-Trent, with the yeast extract provided by the local Bass Brewery. The popularity of the sticky brown product soon soared.
The basic recipe of brewer's yeast, salt, spices and celery hasn't changed. It's rich in folic acid and B vitamins.
Marmite was originally sold in earthenware pots and got the name from a French word for a traditional casserole dish. An image of one has appeared on its glass jars since the 1920s.
Thanks to its nutritional properties, the spread was issued as cubes in the official rations given to British troops serving in World War One. In the 1930s it was used in India to treat anaemia.
