Brazilian is the shining example of United's wastefulness

- JEREMY CROSS CHIEF SPORTS WRITER

THE CASE IN POINT

SOME people will consider it to be the end of an error.

The curtain call for a footballer who represented all that was wrong with Manchester United.

Sir Alex Ferguson once insisted he wouldn't sell Real Madrid “a virus”.

But, in retirement, was forced to sit and watch the Spanish giants he never got along with flog his beloved United someone who personified the club's utter desperation.

United spent £70million on signing Casemiro in 2022.

The Brazilian was Erik Ten Hag's greatest - and most expensive - indulgence during his failed time as manager.

Casemiro had a CV to die for. He was a serial winner.

But what United overlooked was the fact he had been so on behalf of the most successful club in football history.

A club which had decided he was dispensable.

United ploughed on regardless, handing someone who was 30 and past his best a deal worth a staggering £375,000-a-week.
