140-year-old bridge falls into river as torrential rain sweeps country
A HISTORIC bridge collapsed as Scotland was battered by torrential rain and heavy winds.
The 140-year-old Spey Viaduct, which formed part of the popular Speyside Way walking route, fell into the river yesterday morning.
Walkers were ordered to avoid the bridge, near Garmouth, and police officers were yesterday pictured standing guard near by.
Photos show one of the spans on the eastern side of the bridge twisted and fallen into the river.
Moray MSP Richard Lochhead said: "The local community will be heartbroken by the collapse of the much-loved Spey Viaduct, which is not only an iconic structure but also incredibly popular with walkers, cyclists and tourists.
