The Red Devils ran amok at Old Trafford to reach the last eight, with both skipper Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro scoring twice as winger Alejandro Garnacho plundered the other.
It was the perfect night for interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, in charge until United can finalise a deal to appoint Sporting gaffer Ruben Amorim.
The Dutchman was brought back to the club, where he became a legend as a player, to be ten Hag's assistant.
But stepping into his shoes, van Nistelrooy admitted it was an emotional 24 hours.
