Lung disease from avian pals

- BY FILIPA GASPAR

A SHOCKED mum told how her son was rushed to hospital and diagnosed with a lung disease - caused by his pet parrots.

Kenny Kajan, 13, who grew up with four of the tropical birds - started having flu-like symptoms including a cough and fevers.

He spent months going back and forth to his GP before being taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with the rare lung disease hypersensitivity pneumonitis.

Medics believe he got it from his pets — a parakeet, two cockatiels and one African grey - which he had since he was nine years old.

Now he can't even be near birds in public or use a feather pillow.

Bird lover mum Iveta, who lives in Leith with her husband and three sons, said: “Even going out and being next to a pigeon is dangerous.

“He can't even have a feather pillow or he is going to be reacting.
