Martin says Rangers must up game for Brugge as Lyall goal seals it on tough night

RUSSELL MARTIN admits ragged Rangers can forget about the Champions League if they don't raise standards sharpish.

The Ibrox boss - who faces an injury sweat after Cyriel Dessers left the Doosan Arena wearing an ankle brace - saw his side set up a £40million door-die clash with Club Brugge for a place in the league phase.

But it was another drab display from the new-look Light Blues as they reached the playoffs despite a defeat to Viktoria Plzen in Bohemia. Gers allowed the Czech outfit to rack up 27 shots on goal while across the team’s opening six games of the new season, keeper Jack Butland has already faced more than 100 attempts on his sticks.

Now Martin confesses his team will struggle if they fail to cut out the sloppiness that gave Plzen hope.

He said: "If we don't show a bit more care and quality on the ball, we will struggle against anyone. I’m disappointed we lost and Tm disappointed with how many chances we gave up.

“So much of it comes from just being so loose with the ball. We were playing against a team who had nothing to lose, who really committed so many numbers, four on the top line, with a heavy press.
