SCOT GEMMILL has defended his Scotland Under-21s preparations after Grimsby manager David Artell suggested his star striker Cameron Gardner is out for four months because of overtraining in his first call-up.

Scotland face a home game against Gibraltar in Dundee next week ahead of the trip to Baku in Azerbaijan in their Euro 2027 qualifiers.

Gemmill named his squad yesterday with Gardner - man of the match in Grimsby’s recent League Cup shock win over Manchester United - out until next year.

He suffered a serious hamstring injury while making his debut for the 21slast month in the Czech Republic.

And Artell has indicated Gardner was worked too hard in the last international break.

He said: “Cam has had an operation on his hamstring so he is going to be out for more than an extended period.
