Council blasted over city's 'disgusting' streets

- BY CHRIS MCCALL

GLASGOW will not be ready to host next year’s Commonwealth Games without “greater focus and investment", a trade union chief has warned.

GMB boss Gary Smith said the city had been ‘abandoned by the political class for a long time” and was struggling as a result.

He was in Charing Cross to launch his union's campaign calling for the city centre’s lanes and back streets to be cleaned up as an urgent priority.

The SNP administration at Glasgow City Chambers hiked council tax by 7.5 per cent this year to fund greater investment in refuse collection and street cleaning teams.

The budget included £2.3million to recruit dedicated neighbourhood clean teams for each ward in the city, which are already making an impact.
