DOM THOMAS made the airport his second home to get in as many visits to Rome as possible.

Now the attacker reckons Ayr are the ones who stand to benefit from him being grounded as they eye takeoff in the Championship away to Arbroath.

The former Queen's Park skipper is back in the league after a five-month stint at Derry City.

Thomas claims it was a “pit of a mismatch” in terms of fitting in to the League of Ireland side's style of play, his game time totalling eight starts and five sub appearances.

But no longer having his time with four-year-old son Rome reduced to flying visits - quite literally - has left him free to focus on hitting new heights with a ball at his feet instead.

The 29-year-old said: “The flight was only maybe 20-30 minutes but it was getting a bit much. It’s the airport waiting about and then travelling from Belfast to Derry. It gets a bit much.
