Hero Fiennes Tiffin stars alongside his uncle Joseph Fiennes in the origin story of the world's greatest detective

In the new mystery series Young Sherlock, Sherlock Holmes has yet to become the famous detective of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novels. Instead, he’s a teenage student, played by Hero Fiennes Tiffin, with a rebellious streak — which is of great annoyance to his father Silas, who is played by Hero's real-life uncle, acclaimed actor Joseph Fiennes.

“I've always loved the idea of working with anyone in my family who's in the industry,” says Hero, 28, who is also the nephew of Ralph Fiennes and son of film director Martha Fiennes. “My mum and Joe are siblings and we're quite a big family, so we don't get to see each other very often.

“On one level, it was a nice excuse to see my uncle a lot more. But then acting opposite him was a blessing — I learnt a lot.

“I see him as my uncle Joe but I also see him as Joseph Fiennes, the amazing actor. It was a privilege to work with him.”

Joseph, 55, who describes his nephew as “wonderful”, was equally thrilled to be working alongside his younger relative.
