Dempsey knows Ayr have to start taking chances to stay in play-off hunt

BEN DEMPSEY has warned Ayr United their playoff place is in serious peril if they don't start punishing teams.

A glut of glaring misses against Airdrie contributed to Ayr's 11th Championship draw of the season.

Chief culprit, in a crazy eight-minute spell, was star striker Anton Dowds.

He had a hapless treble of botched big chances in the second half as Ayr clicked late and looked like nicking a win.

But Dempsey put his own hand up for a chunk of the blame. The skipper was one-v-one with Harry Stone on 18 minutes.

He opted for an early strike and that helped the former on-loan Ayr keeper turn the effort out for a corner.

It was all too typical of an inconsistent promotion effort throughout the season from the Honest Men.

Dempsey, 26, admits their campaign is in danger of stalling altogether if they can't find a fix with 15 games to go and the pack closing in.

He said: “It could've been four or five if we'd taken our chances so it's frustrating.
