Inflation squeezes buying power & UK among worst

- BY GRAHAM HISCOTT

MILLIONS of families are facing a fresh cost-of-living squeeze, with warnings of worse to come.

Office for National Statistics figures out yesterday showed inflation rose by more than expected last month, to 3.8 per cent.

The increase, from 3.6 per cent in June, was fuelled by a spike in air fares and higher food bills. It means living costs are rising at the fastest rate since January last year, and are almost double the Bank of England's two per cent target – though still well below late 2022's 11 per cent-plus peak.

The rise in food prices is ongoing, and picked up to nearly five per cent in July.
