Hollywood stars will hope for return on spending spree
WREXHAM’S Hollywood owners have taken a £33million hit after funding a major transfer spree this summer.
A total of 13 new players have come through the door in the last few months as the Red Dragons look to establish a foothold in the Championship. They include a clubrecord deal which saw Wrexham fork out an initial fee of £7.5m, potentially climbing to as much as £10m with addons, to sign Ipswich Town forward Nathan Broadhead.
The capture of Manchester City defender Callum Doyle for £7.5m and the deadline day acquisition of Coventry midfielder Ben Sheaf for £6.5m also caught the eye. Meanwhile, former England international Conor Coady was the most well-known star to join, despite the Leicester defender costing a more modest amount of £2m.
According to figures from transfermarkt.co.uk, Wrexham's overall outlay during the transfer window places them third in the list of top spenders out of the 72 EFL clubs, with only Ipswich Town (£47.9m) and Southampton (£40.7m) ahead of them. In the case of those two teams, their net spend was actually lower than Wrexham’s thanks to money raised through player sales, with Ipswich raking in £75.9m and Southampton banking £110.7m.
