Wales could face Canada, Qatar and Switzerland

Wales could face co-hosts Canada, 2022 hosts Qatar and fellow European side Switzerland in next summer's FIFA World Cup in the Americas if they can make it through the playoffs in the new year.

The draw for the expanded 48-team World Cup was made in a ceremony at the John F Kennedy Center in Washington DC yesterday and Wales know who they will face if they can make it through the European playoffs.

Wales face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the World Cup qualifying playoff semifinals in March.

Should Wales win through, they will face either Italy or Northern Ireland in a winner-takes-all match for a spot at the next summer's tournament.

In yesterday's draw, Wales and those three other teams were grouped together as “European Play-Off A”.

Joint-hosts Canada are the lowest ranked of the pot one nations. Wales’ game against Canada could also have an edge to it.

When Wales lost a friendly to the Canadians in Swansea in September, head coach Craig Bellamy was unhappy with the way his opponents celebrated.
