The Assassin stars Keeley Hawes and Freddie Highmore discuss complicated mother-son dynamics with LYNN RUSK

SON OF A GUN

The series begins with Julie enjoying living her quiet, solitary life in Greece, attempting to escape her violent past.

That peace is shattered when her son Edward unexpectedly shows up, full of questions, especially about his paternity.

Freddie, 33, who came to fame as a child playing the title role in Tim Burton's Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, describes his character as an overthinker burdened by emotional baggage.

"He's a young journalist living in London, which means he hasn't seen his mum in a while, so they're quite estranged," he says.

"He's harbouring a lot of secrets and feelings he's been repressing, so this is a big step for him - to reach out and see her."

Edward arrives in Greece hoping to reconnect and find answers about his past, their relationship, and his father.

"Things kick off in a very dramatic way," Freddie adds.

The Bates Motel and The Good Doctor star says the opportunity to work with Keeley was a huge draw.

"Getting the chance to work with Keeley was absolutely brilliant and such a huge attraction, as was the script," he says.
