School is closed after fire crews battle blaze

PUPILS were told to stay home yesterday after a fire broke out at their school over the weekend.

The blaze took hold at St Martin's School in Oswestry on Sunday evening, with thick smoke seen billowing from the building.

The school is over the border in Shropshire, but pupils from parts of north east Wales attend.

At its height, around eight fire engines and an aerial ladder platform fought the blaze, with crews from North Wales also drafted in.

Aerial footage showed flames leaping out of the roof of the building, as firefighters shot jets of water to quell the fire and stop it spreading further.

On Sunday, headteacher Alison Pope told parents on the school's social media page: "We are currently assessing the damage to the school building. School is closed [on Monday] to all pupils.
