WAYNE Rooney's spell as manager of Plymouth Argyle might have been disastrous for the club, but newly departed striker Ryan Hardie believes it helped his game.

The 28-year-old left Argyle to join Wrexham for an undisclosed fee on Monday after penning a three-year deal with the Welsh side. The Scottish forward’s decision to move on follows Argyle’s relegation from the Championship this season.

Meanwhile, Wrexham, owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are gearing up to compete in the second tier for the first time in 43 years after clinching promotion from League One in April.

Hardie will take a solid goals-coring record away with him, having hit double figures in his last four seasons with Argyle.

He also netted the penalty that saw them oust Liverpool from the FA Cup in February, notching 12 goals in 40 appearances across all competitions this term.

Manchester United icon Rooney managed Argyle for seven months last year.

His tenure was less than successful, leaving the club languishing at the bottom of the Championship table in December.
