The Cardiff-headquartered business, which has assets of £14.1bn, has confirmed Ms Haines will be succeeded by chief financial officer Iain Mansfield as chief executive designate from October 13, before he takes up the role formally, subject to regulatory approval, next month.

Aberdeen-born Ms Haines held various senior positions with the mutual before being appointed chief executive in 2020.

She steered the business through the pandemic, served on the Prime Minister's UK Business Council, as well as implementing an ambitious growth strategy, which is on track to double the size of the business and reach one million savers by 2030.
