Owners face paying even more council tax if homes are empty for a long time

RECOMMENDATIONS to increase council tax premiums on long-term empty homes in Gwynedd from 100% to 150% - in line with second homes - have been unanimously backed by councillors.
Cyngor Gwynedd’s cabinet has approved proposals for its favoured options for 2026/27 during a meeting on Tuesday.
The final decision will be made during a full council meeting on December 4.
Cabinet members agreed to keep the premium levels the same for second homes, but agreed to raise the premium for homes that have been empty for 12 months or more from 100% to 150%.
The council said the number of empty homes in Gwynedd remained “a concern” According to a June 2025 report, there were 1,121 long-term vacant properties in the county.
