Konate stunned by fans' reaction to winning title

And the Reds centre-back admits he was almost lost for words when trying to explain an “amazing” Anfield occasion on Sunday.

And hundreds of thousands of fans lined the streets to cheer their heroes as Liverpool showed off the Premier League trophy during an open-topped bus parade.

The Reds were crowned champions for a record-equalling 20th time on Sunday when they were presented with the Premier League trophy after the 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace on the final day of the season.

Having been denied a collective celebration due to pandemic restrictions when Liverpool ended a 30-year wait to win the title in 2020, supporters have been keen to make the most of Arne Slot's side having won the title with four games remaining.

And Konate said: "You know we spoke a lot about that and since I've been here, we were very close to winning the Premier League in my first season but after that, we didn’t and I think this season, when we achieved this and I met some fans, some of them told me they were waiting 35 years.

"And I was thinking 'Thirty-five years? I was not born, I was not of this world, you know! When you see the eyes of some fans crying, it was just amazing."

Asked how much the occasion lived up to expectations, Konate added: "To be fair I have no words to explain all of that.
