Hundreds attend funeral to pay last respects to Senedd Member

The Labour MS for Caerphilly died suddenly at his home in Nelson at the age of 47, the day before his birthday on August 12.

Mr David's funeral took place at St Catwg's Church, Gelligaer, yesterday.

His coffin was draped in a Welsh flag, and was carried into the church to Make Me A Channel Of Your Peace. High-profile politicians were in attendance, including First Minister Eluned Morgan.

Hymns included Calon Lan and Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer, and a eulogy was read by Dr Huw Brunt.

The poem The Strength of the Mountain was read at the funeral, and there were also prayers of commendation. I Bob Un Sy'n Ffyddlon was played at the end of the service.

Mr David's coffin was then taken to Thornhill Crematorium, Cardiff, entering to the sound of Piano Man, by Billy Joel.

The hymn The Lord’s My Shepherd was sung, and there were tributes from Sir Wayne David and Vaughan Gething MS.

A visual tribute followed, to the sound of Knockin' On Heaven's Door, by Guns N' Roses, followed by the committal.

The farewell music played was November Rain, by Guns N' Roses.

Ahead of yesterday's funeral, Welsh Labour said that beyond politics and his passion for the community he loved, Mr David will be remembered as a “devoted family man”.
