18 months of 20mph in Wales: slower traffic and more speed tickets

The new default limit was introduced on a vast majority of previously 30mph roads in Wales in September 2023.

Transport for Wales has been monitoring speeds since the summer of 2023 at 43 sites in 10 different areas across Wales - with around 7 million vehicle journeys recorded in each monitoring period.

The analysis looked at a number of statistics. These included the percentage of drivers travelling at or under 24mph on the roads that changed from 30mph to 20mph.

They also recorded the weighted mean speed of all drivers.

In the summer of 2023 - prior to implementation - the percentage of drivers going at or below 24mph was 20.8%. In this same period around 37% of drivers were going over 30mph, with 10.4% of those at 35mph or higher.

The weighted mean speed of all drivers was 28.7mph.
