Call to decentralise SAPS has heads shaking

THE call for reform within the South African Police Service (SAPS) by KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Provincial Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has garnered significant attention, yet it is met with a wave of scepticism.
During his recent testimony before Parliament's ad hoc committee, Mkhwanazi proposed that police powers be decentralised to provincial commissioners as a strategy to combat crime and corruption plaguing the service.
According to Mkhwanazi, empowering provincial leaders will ensure better oversight and accountability within SAPS, claiming that the current system, where control resides predominantly with the National Commissioner, presents inherent risks.
