Judge wants answers as 'deviant' gets 3rd jail term

A JUDGE has questioned the thinking behind moving a rapist to an open prison only for him to commit a violent assault while on day release, as he had in 2002.

Neil Trennan, 61, was handed his third life sentence after attacking a student, then 19, at knifepoint while on unaccompanied leave last July.

He had followed his victim into her Sheffield home and admitted he had intended to commit a violent rape and inflict serious bodily harm to her.

Trennan was previously convicted of hitting a woman with a brick in a public toilet while again on day release in 2002.
