BRITAIN stood alongside fellow Nato members in defiance of US President Donald Trump's threats to impose tariffs if he is not permitted to take over Greenland.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the leaders of Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden warned in a joint statement that Mr Trump's plan risks a "dangerous downward spiral".

It came as Danish soldiers arrived by boat at the port in Greenland's capital Nuuk. Exercises with Nato allies will take place in and around the island this year.

The statement said: "As members of Nato we are committed to strengthening Arctic security as a shared transatlantic interest.

"The pre-coordinated Danish exercise Arctic Endurance conducted with Allies responds to this necessity.

It poses no threat to anyone.
