Poignant ways to mark VE Day
Daily Mirror UK
|May 12, 2025
WHAT a glorious week of celebrations to mark the end of the war 80 years ago. I was moved to tears by the stories I have read of veterans who served their country.
-
To see the Union Jack flying and knowing that so many people were organising street parties and events to mark the occasion was wonderful. We mustn't let the younger generations forget what happened during the Second World War and why in 1945 on VE Day people were so jubilant that the war had ended.
As the numbers of veterans still alive sadly dwindle, we have to make sure we record their stories and remember the sacrifices made.
George Marlow, Tenby, Pembs
The Westminster Abbey VE Day service was incredibly poignant. It was a very special occasion and I was glad to see so many veterans there, 80 years since the UK declared Victory in Europe and signalled the end of the war.
It was wonderful to see so many people waving flags and watching the flyover at the Mall in London. The RAF planes and Red Arrows were truly spectacular.
