Wilf Walker OBE was the brains behind the first live stage that transformed the Carnival from a beleaguered event, tainted by crime, to a musical spectacular.

Riots at the 1976 event - sparked by accusations that a small group were picking pockets - left around 250 people hospitalised, including 120 police officers, with 60 arrested.
